Is 2010 the Year to Sell A Small Business In Arizona?
That's a good and fair question. Many small business owners in Arizona (primarily the Phoenix area) I spoke with in 2009 felt that because there sales were off (in some cases considerably) because of the recession that they would not be able to get the value or asking price for their business that they were seeking. In a lot of cases I would have to agree with this overall assessment. But I also believe the credit and and small business lending crunch was also one of the primary reasons why a lot of small business owners in Arizona and across the USA decided to defer selling in 2009.
As far as the outlook for selling a small Arizona business in 2010, my guess is that conditions are going to improve considerably as compared to 2009. By all accounts there has been a more serious push by lenders to open up small business lending and many economists believe the recession is nearing its end with modest economic growth returning in 2010. Sellers also seem to be a bit more realistic about pricing their businesses as well as more flexible in offering terms (seller financing, etc) that should attract more qualified buyers.
Speaking of buyers, they are out there, but in my opinion many have been frustrated by the lending crunch as well as the current small inventory of good and established business for sale listings in the Arizona market.
So in summary I think 2010 will be a much better year to move forward with selling an established (3 years min) small business in Arizona than 2009. I also believe that as conditions improve sellers that deferred selling over the last 2 years could potentially see a lot more crowded market of business for sale listings.
